Prof. Khaligh, alongside MPEL Ph.D. students Jiangheng Lu and Ayan Mallik, received the University of Maryland’s 2017 Invention of the Year Award not only in the Physical Sciences Category but also the Overall University Award (among Life Sciences, Physical Sciences and Information Sciences categories). The invention was titled “Integrated Power Electronics Interface for Enhanced Electric Vehicle Charging”.

The Maryland Power Electronics Lab designed a 400V to 12V, 750W, GaN Based DC-DC converter for Data Center, with 15W/cm3 power density and over 97% maximum efficiency. The converter was designed for the 2017 IEEE International Future Energy Challenge (IFEC). MPEL team won the Best Presentation Award.
